Brazilian Bass Culture & Beyond

A constant and often underground current in Brazilian music since the late 70s has been the influence of reggae music. In the 1990s bands such as Chico Science & Nação Zumbi and Planet Hemp embraced dub and hip hop, mixed with local beats and rhythms, and redefined Brazilian music in the process

Showing just how different styles can cross-fertilize and stimulate each other, the Brasil Music Exchange, a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting local music around the world, has assembled a free compilation of radical and truly 21st century Brazilian music. 

Musical influences from Kingston, New York, London and Bogota are mutated by a young generation of artists from Bahia, Pernambuco, Rio de Janeiro & São Paulo

He followed J. Dilla’s lead, experimenting with chopping techniques and reorganizing the already angelic harmonies of the Beach Boys to use them as instruments to flavour the beat

"On the first day of british summertime a package was posted through the door of the vinyl miner's country retreat. It had a quarter inch reel to reel tape, a crocus, three seeds and a polaroid of the sun, a piece of glass that looked like a diamond inside it and a scribbled quote from Huxley.
 

It smelt of shed dust. We listened to the tape and it all made sense, if a little fuzzy.
Here is a c-45 size edit of the tape, we hope you enjoy it, we recommend sitting out side to listen to it, in the sun."
